Florida Health Department statistics show drowning is the leading cause of death for Florida’s young children.
In fact, Florida loses more children under the age of 5 to drowning compared to any other state.
In Hillsborough County, parents can take advantage of a free Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA Safety Around Water program for children ages 3-12.
Lalita Llerena, the communications director for the YMCA, said the Safety Around Water program is part of a national YMCA initiative. The program takes place at all of the different YMCA branches in Hillsborough County including the Campo Family YMCA, Bob Gilbertson Central City Family YMCA, Bob Sierra Family YMCA, New Tampa Family YMCA, North Brandon Family YMCA, South Tampa Family YMCA and others.
“We had the free swim program association-wide for two years, but last year it was called SPLASH! Week,” Llerena said.
“One of our branches (Bob Sierra Family YMCA) has been offering SPLASH! Week to community members for at least a decade. We definitely see a lot of interest from the community. Classes fill up quickly and we typically have a wait list at each branch.”
Safety Around Water is open to swimmers and non-swimmers ages 3 to 12 years old.
Amanda Walker, the Tampa YMCA Aquatics executive director, said during the four-day course, certified instructors teach young people a set of skills to reduce the risk of drowning. The lessons also build children’s confidence in and around water.
In order to participate, YMCA membership is not required. However, pre-registration is required due to limited space. Participants should bring a swimsuit and towel. For more information on exact times, which vary by location, visit your local YMCA.
